‘The Real’
Neo:studios presents The Real, a solo exhibition displaying a selection of contemporary paintings by artist Keiran McKeown. The show will be hosted in neo:gallery 32, Corporation Street, Bolton, BL1 2AN
Since meeting his current partner and becoming a carer for her daughter – who has muscular dystrophy – Keiran has come to the realisation that other peoples perceptions are disability is still very much stigmatised.
Keiran’s paintings incorporate this understanding and also explore and question the tradition and hierarchy of the still life painting. By using his own experiences and source material, and through a traditional and classical approach to oil painting, relatively typical and mundane “kitchen sink” scenes are presented to the viewer, who are then confronted by the realisation that in Keiran’s world medicines and syringes live along side the vimto and bread.
As the artists says ‘I think there is an expectation when it comes to the still life painting, and in my work I try to exploit this notion and force the viewer into a scenario – or world if you like, where medicine, medical equipment and disability are a normal part of peoples lives’.
Proceeds from the exhibition will be going to a fund created by family and friends for a trip to Disneyland for Harley.
Keiran’s exhibition The Real, will run from 12th April – 5th May and will be open Thursday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm.
