Heather Burns

My artistic practice continues to move between drawing and painting in nature and developing such responses back in the studio into paintings or textile outcomes. I wait to see which motifs pull me towards them when outside, with colour, light and atmosphere continuing to be central to such decisions. Abstraction, colour and mark making in situ provide crucial reference starting points and work then develops out from these. I am also working on textile and puppetry responses with a view to offering such in workshop contexts for adult survivors of sexual abuse. My embroidery informs this, and I am especially interested in the way process can bring us into the moment through a meditative and embodied awareness of the creative experience. This links to my recent Arts-health MA. I hope to offer such workshops to participants found through a local facility that offers counselling to such survivors. I firmly believe in the potential benefits of such an approach to develop creative and non-staid possibilities that bring us fully into the present. The workshops themselves would also offer the potential for social interaction. Being and becoming creatives together.
