Here are some examples of Jo’s 2D works on paper. Although some would consider these to be paintings, Jo creates these from a sculptural perspective as she constructs the image in layers using oil paint and cold wax medium, then deconstructs the media to allow for the under layers to to be visible. No formal painting techniques are employed in these works and are in a sense sculpted 2D works which are created from subconscious images and have a strong pareidolic and illusionary aspect to them which plays with the brains tendency to detect and recognise social cues, yet Jo states that these elements are not purposefully created and are merely an happenstance aspect to working from the subconscious. As a result, viewers tend to see content within the work based upon their own frame of reference and how their brain detects visual cues.
