neo:artist of the month

Everyone meet Marguerite Heywood, one of our neo: associate members @margueriteheywood

She says…

It’s efficient to work at home as I need access to a lot of materials and a couple of machines, so after being a neo: Studio Holder I became an Associate. I still enjoy a lot of advantages and I help with the running of the studios. The Art Crits are enjoyable and very helpful and the online shows and our “In the Box” studio show have featured my work. The neo: community includes some very interesting artists whose work I admire.

A bit about her work featured on this post…

Blood Sampler, Thirteen

I try to find ways to express contemporary issues. Textiles remove the illusion of reality, so that feeds into my interest in abstraction.

My red and white series of textile works references our bodies inside, while using a colour set associated with traditional embroidered folk wear. From the darkness they are re-imagined as something large and bright. These two pieces are also grid-like, a form which I often like to use.

Much knowledge begins with listing and categorising which differs in different cultures or even in different individuals. The origin of “Blood Sampler” was my vaguely internalised view of how I might categorise small amounts of blood. It makes almost no sense in the rational scientific world but it’s a way of seeing.

“Thirteen” is a flashover-year of things which might be connected to menstruation. I like it when cloth or threads breach the boundary of the piece, kind of creeping into the real world.

Like most textile artists I recycle and use everything – this process can provoke unexpected combinations of fabric and thread and I hope that the fine detail of the work’s undergrowth contributes to its energy.
