My work is characterised by strong colour and a broad palette. The expressive use of paint spans the range between the often organic or fluid and the mechanical or constructed.
I believe the purest form of painting is abstract and that this is also for me the most demanding and challenging of the genre. In an intuitive act of spontaneity it takes imagination, knowledge and experience to construct a composition without using the detail of the external world. It also demands an act of courage to stand alone and explore who and what we are whilst illustrating what we often find lies deep within us.
For me a painting is not constructed from random or automatic acts. It is not a case of applying paint without a motivational force. The marks and colours I use have meaning even though I may have trouble putting into words their significance. They are expressions of my visual thinking over a period of time. I hope they work as a meaningful aesthetic experience when they are viewed by others.
